Freshmen Year Guidelines - (0 – 29 credits)

Academic Guidelines

  • Engage with SEEK Counselor and Peer Mentor
  • Continue to utilize technological and college resources: College’s website, SEEK’s website,  John Jay student email, CUNYFirst, Brightspace, SEEK academic support, library, etc.
  • Refer to DegreeWorks on the CUNY website. This is a useful tool for keeping track of the courses you have taken and future courses you still have to complete.
  • Maintain a strong GPA
  • Remain constant in registering for 15 credits each semester
  • Attend academic support on consistent basis
  • Examine all your syllabi and keep up with assignments on Brightspace
  • Make sure to seek early advisement and register early (SEEK students have priority to register for classes). When meeting with your SEEK Counselor be sure to formulate questions. Registering early ensures the schedule that you want.
  • Be prepared to discuss your academic progress during your advising appointment. Refer to your DegreeWorks and the class schedule to determine which courses to take next semester.
  • Be aware of dates and deadlines on the Academic Calendar to keep track of important dates, such as Mondays following a Friday’s schedule, the deadline to withdraw from classes and so on. 
  • If you are struggling academically, meet with your SEEK Counselor. Explore with your advisor resources such as wellness, SEEK academic support, and other educational support.
  • Check your CUNYFirst record regularly to ensure that you have no holds that might prevent you from registering, receiving financial or other items in your to-do list.

College Life Guidelines

  • Engage in Student Life. There are numerous clubs, athletic activities, internships, volunteer work and student government to join on campus.
  • Participate in all seek and ongoing campus activity, complete internships requirement in my field of study.
  • Excel each semester to join the Dean’s List and Honor Society such as Chi Alpha Epsilon (XAE)
  • Develop your networking skills and attend resume workshops provided by the Center for Career & Professional Development
  • Analyze your progress for TAP and PELL for financial aid purposes
  • Become proficient with utilizing computer application such as Office 365 and the Internet for research

Personal Guidelines

  • Continue to work with a mentor or role model within or outside of the institution.
  • Identify with the support of your SEEK Counselor and faculty member who might be able to provide career and academic advice
