Welcome to the Fall Semester

Welcome, Bloodhounds! Campus services are fully open and we're ready to assist you in making the most of your college experience. Please check regularly your text messages and John Jay email for important updates, reminders, and student events throughout the semester. Here are some steps to start the semester strong.

Steps to a Successful Fall Semester

  • To get your ID card, visit the main office of Public Safety, L2.61 NB 7:00am to 11:00pm, Monday through Thursday, and 7:00 am to 9:00 pm on Friday. To request an individual appointment during off-hours, call (212) 237-8524. Please make sure you have your vaccination record uploaded  and approved on CUNYfirst before requesting your ID. 
  • If you already have an ID card, your ID card will be activated before classes start.
  • To obtain an ID later in the semester, or request a replacement, students can visit the main office of Public Safety, L2.61 NB.

Important dates at the start of the semester

8/28: First day of classes
9/3: Last day to add/swap classes
9/17: Last day to drop without a W grade; Attendance verification closes
9/17: Last day to resolve INC grades from Spring 2024 and Summer 2024

Department

  • Use the Schedule Builder tile in CUNYFirst to check your course schedule. Make sure class details are on to see instruction modalities, meeting times, and room assignments. See a description of the instruction modalities and how to do well in each modality. 
  • Online classes: Make sure you can access Brightspace for your classes and check your John Jay email for messages from your professors.
  • In-person classes: Use this map to find your classes on campus.
  • Avoid getting dropped from your class on September 18. Show up for your online and in-person classes and participate in the class activities to be counted as present.  

You can change a course or add a course for the spring semester before September 3: 

1. Click on your DegreeWorks tile in CUNYFirst to see what areas of your degree still need to be completed..
2. Meet with an academic advisor if you need help or have questions.

Update your email in CUNYfirst (see infographic)

  1. Log in to CUNYfirst.
  2. Click on Student Center > Profile.
  3. At the left side of the page, select Contact Details > click on Campus Email.
  4. Click the checkbox next to “Preferred” under your John Jay email address.
  5. Click Save to save changes.
  6. Empty your inbox regularly to continue recieving messages.
  7. If you run into trouble, call the John Jay Technology Helpdesk at 212-237-8200. 

Forward your email in BrightSpace (see webpage:)

  1. Log in to BrightSpace.
  2. Navigate to the Email tool.
  3. Click Settings (indicated with the gear icon).
  4. Under Forwarding Options, click the check box Forward incoming messages to an alternate email account.
  5. Enter the email address that you want your Brightspace emails forwarded to.
  6. Choose one of the following options:
    Select Forward and delete from the Inbox folder to forward any email sent to your account to the address specified. The emails will no longer be accessible through Brightspace.
    Select Forward and mark unread in the Inbox folder to forward any email sent to your account to the address specified. The email will also exist in your Brightspace account and will be marked as unread.
    Select Forward and mark read in the Inbox folder to forward any email sent to your account to the address specified. The email will also exist in your Brightspace account and will be marked as read
  7. Click Save.

Forwarding actions are set up and saved for all emails that you receive in your inbox.

Enable Notification Announcements in BrightSpace (see webpage:)

  1. Navigate to the course that you want to enable Announcements notifications for.
  2. In the Announcements widget, click the drop-down menu and select Notifications.
  1. A new page loads where you can enter your desired contact methods:
    Email Address: Click on the Enable email notifications hyperlink to add in your email address so that you can receive email notifications about your course.
  2. Click the check boxes for your desired methods of communication when receiving Announcements notifications.
    > Announcements – announcement updated: Sends you a notification if an existing announcement posted by your instructor was updated.
    > Announcements – new announcement available: Sends you a notification if a new announcement was posted to your course.

Update your phone number in CUNYfirst (look out for text messages from a JJC Student Success Specialist)

  1. Log in to CUNYfirst.
  2. Click on Campus Solutions. 
  3. At the top of the page, select Main Menu > Self Service > Campus Personal Information > Phones.
  4. Modify your phone number or add a phone number.
  5. Click Submit to save changes.
  6. If you run into trouble, call the John Jay Technology Helpdesk at 212-237-8200.

FAFSA and TAP

  • Submit your 2024/2025 FAFSA application to apply for federal financial aid.  The FAFSA code for John Jay College is 002693.
  • NYS residents can apply for TAP directly if they were not prompted to do so when filing their FAFSA application. The TAP code for Undergraduate Students is 1414. 
     

Emergency Funds 
Students needing additional funds for tuition or books can apply for emergency funds. Information on the different funds available and how to apply can be found on the Emergency Funding Website

All students are required to complete SPARC (Sexual and Interpersonal Violence Prevention and Response Course). Failure to complete your SPARC training will result in the inability to register in future semesters.

  1. Log in to Blackboard to access the course.
  2. In the left hand panel, click the "Organizations" link.
  3. You will see “John Jay College Student SPARC” listed in your organizations. Click the title to gain access. If you can't find it, search for "SPARC" in the search bar at the top.
  4. Follow the instructions to complete the training.
