Matthew Perry is an Associate Professor in the History Department at John Jay College and in the Classics Department at the CUNY Graduate Center. He is a specialist in ancient history, teaching courses on a wide range of topics. His research focuses on Roman social and cultural history, especially issues of gender, legal status, and social standing. His first book, Gender, Manumission, and the Roman Freedwoman, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2014.  Other publications appear in the Oxford Companion to Roman Law, the Journal of Ancient History, and the Ancient History Bulletin.  He is currently working on a new project that examines forms of sexual prohibition and obligation in ancient Rome.
