On Wednesday, June 1, more than 3,400 students will become the newest John Jay alumni at the College’s 51st annual Commencement ceremonies, to be held once again at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden.

“The Class of 2016 is one of our largest ever,” said President Jeremy Travis, “and I am confident that our newest graduates, like the tens of thousands who have preceded them, will go forth from John Jay ready to make their mark locally, nationally and globally as fierce advocates for justice.”

Preliminary data from the College registrar’s office show a graduating class comprising 1,363 males and 2,044 females, ranging in age from 19-year-old Anthony Orlando to 72-year-old Lucille Burrascano. There will be 2,930 bachelor’s degrees awarded, along with 634 master’s degrees. The class includes 143 military veterans and 379 international students representing 82 countries.

Nine pairs of siblings are in the Class of 2016, including two sets of twins — Bassel and Kaher Ahmad, and José and John Linares.

The Class of 2016 will be led by valedictorian Albin Lepiz, an International Criminal Justice major who earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. The class salutatorian is Benil Mustafa, who is also an International Criminal Justice major with a perfect GPA.

Honorary doctorates will be presented at the 10:30 A.M. and 3:30 P.M. ceremonies to two individuals with solid credentials as “fierce advocates for justice”: playwright Eve Ensler, author of “The Vagina Monologues” and a long-time activist in the fields of gender justice; and Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, a distinguished law professor and scholar of civil rights law and critical race theory.
