One of 35 Institutions Recognized Nationally
(New York, NY) -- John Jay College of Criminal Justice is proud to be named a 2021 Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Leader by the Fulbright Program in recognition of the College’s engagement with the Fulbright exchange and its dedication to providing Latinx students with opportunities that enrich their educational experience.
“As one of the most diverse senior colleges in the City University of New York system, we are committed to helping our students develop a global perspective about issues of justice,” says John Jay College President Karol V. Mason. “We are proud that Fulbright sees our commitment to engaging more Latinx students in international study.”
John Jay is one of 35 institutions to be recognized by the Fulbright Program as an HSI Leader. The initiative is part of the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) longstanding commitment to build diversity and inclusion within the Fulbright Program and within all the Bureau’s international exchange programs.
“International experiences have played a huge role in my becoming the person I am today, but far too many Black and Brown students never have that opportunity or even think about it,” says John Jay’s Fulbright Program Advisor Charles Davidson, Director of the College’s Pre-Law Institute and Center for Post-Graduate Opportunities. “For several years, we have worked hard to showcase the Fulbright program and prepare students to apply. We are honored to be recognized for our efforts.”
With the benefit of Dr. Davidson’s guidance, each year John Jay students apply for the very competitive Fulbright Award and several have earned opportunities to study abroad. Most recently, Shanell D. Bailey ’18 travelled to Jamaica to research the Prison-to-College-Pipeline; Houssaynatou Barry ’18 travelled to Ghana to study women’s educational development; and Istou Diallo ’17 studied women with disabilities in India.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Academic Programs Ethan Rosenzweig, speaking on behalf of ECA, which sponsors the Fulbright Program, congratulated and thanked the leadership of the designated institutions for recognizing the impact of the Fulbright Program, saying, “Thank you for creating a campus culture that celebrates the mission of Fulbright and international exchanges. Thank you for epitomizing the principle that mutual understanding between peoples of the United States and other countries will lead to a more just and peaceful society at home.”
