The Chronicle of Higher Education’s 2016 Almanac recently listed John Jay College of Criminal Justice 7th among more than 600 universities nationwide in terms of greatest increase in research grant dollars for the fiscal years 2005 – 2014, and 12th in terms of greatest increase in federal research dollars for the same period. John Jay College was the only senior college in the City University of New York (CUNY) system to make the list of growing research institutions.
Dr. Anthony Carpi, Associate Provost and Dean of Research, said “The increase in research awards to John Jay faculty and staff is an outstanding acknowledgement of the work of our scholars and the important and noteworthy contributions they’ve made, and continue to make, in their respective fields.”
In 2006, President Jeremy Travis established the Office of the Advancement of Research (OAR) to extend the scope of support for faculty research. Over the last decade, OAR has promoted scholarly activity via workshops, one-on-one mentoring, collaboration, and internal programs aimed at professional development. Most recently, during the 2014-2015 fiscal year, John Jay faculty members were awarded $23.3 million in grants, exceeding the previous year’s total by more than 35 percent, and produced some 1,600 works, including books, journal articles and other written and performance pieces.
