As the fall 2016 semester gets underway — and with it, the start of new seasons for student athletes — the John Jay College athletics program has added three new head coaches to its 15-sport roster.
In June, Lynda Day was named as the head women's basketball coach, coming to John Jay after five seasons on the staff of SUNY Old Westbury. A 2003 graduate of Queens College, where she played for the women’s basketball team and later coached, Day was the lead assistant coach at Old Westbury, helping to lead the team to the 2016 Skyline Conference championship and its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
"It is an honor to be given this amazing opportunity to lead the John Jay Bloodhounds program," she said Day. "I am confident with hard work and consistency we will improve each day as athletes, students, and most importantly as people."
The women’s swimming team will be under the guidance of new head coach Patricia Orellana, a former top assistant for the men's and women's swim teams at Purchase College.
Orellana was a standout student athlete in both swimming and softball at Purchase, from which she graduated in 2009. "I have always believed that a swimmer-coach relationship is an equal partnership,” she said. “I encourage my swimmers to work with me, rather than for me. I also put a very strong emphasis on being competitive in whatever they do. There is a lot of value in applying the will to win and the will to succeed in everything they do throughout their lives."
Juan Andrade has been named the head women's tennis coach at John Jay, and he vowed to make the team "a force to be reckoned with.”
Andrade, a 2008 graduate of Binghamton University, is the founder and executive director of Tennis Innovators, a portable tennis academy that provides lessons to adults and juniors in New York City. Before Tennis Innovators, he was a program coordinator and assistant manager for Sportime Island Tennis for six years.
