Scholarly research is an integral part of John Jay’s mission to explore issues of justice. To celebrate the extensive research conducted at John Jay, and to applaud the impressive amount of grants and awards our faculty has garnered, on May 14 the Office for the Advancement of Research (OAR) hosted their 6th Annual Grants Reception, where they honored the 76 faculty recipients of external grants and awards in 2018. “This is our annual reception for individuals at the College who secured major external awards over the past year,” said Anthony Carpi, Professor of Environmental Chemistry and Dean of Research. Since 2013, there has been an 86 percent growth in awards and grants, expanding our College’s impact.

Highlighting his appreciation and admiration for our faculty’s work, Provost Yi Li said, “I was recently at CUNY Central, attending the counsel for the just-retired Interim Provost Vita Rabinowitz, and she said ‘There’s no other college like John Jay. The way the College has increased their research enterprise in the last few years is incredible.’ So, I give you my sincere congratulations.” 

When President Karol V. Mason spoke, she reiterated the role faculty has had in helping to elevate John Jay as a research institution. “With your help, we have increased our grant award dollars by over 50 percent from the previous years to $31.4 million—the largest on record,” she said. “And, I hope you all know that the money that is allocated, Anthony and I have great conversations about how we can put it back into the College. One of the things that we did this year was to give out research awards for curriculum development.”

President Mason noted how our faculty is instrumental in helping to foster student success. “We gave out research awards for professors who run a department with undergraduate students from different academic ranges, to help develop them into future researchers,” she said. “Thank you for the gift of being able to create opportunities for our students to become our future researchers.”
