Assistant Professor David Shapiro of the Department of Public Management, has written an op-ed published by CNBC that examines Apple’s opposition to a recent federal court order to help the Federal Bureau Investigation unlock an iPhone used by one of the attackers in the San Bernardino, CA, shooting. In the piece, “Why Apple hack is a bad idea,” Professor Shapiro states that, “we should be careful about quick, easy cases involving heinous individuals such as the perpetrator. What is created judicially often becomes public policy rendering all of our notes, observations, doubts, jottings, etc. available to the government.”

Shapiro teaches in the MPA program and serves as Deputy Director in the Advanced Certificate in Forensic Accounting at John Jay. He has practiced in the field of management consulting in forensic accounting, fraud examination and risk management as well as law enforcement for almost thirty years.  Shapiro has served as a prosecutor and certified public accountant, and worked as an investigator in the public and private sectors. He has published numerous articles and book chapters on topics ranging from mergers and acquisitions to Ponzi schemes.
