Health Services offers students free on-campus and telehealth appointments with a board-certified nurse practitioner.
The nurse practitioner at John Jay can diagnose, treat, and prescribe medications, much like a physician in a similar setting. The nurse practitioner treats a variety of illnesses in-person and via telehealth. Common issues include colds and flu, allergies, fever, headache, body pains, minor injuries, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, bladder infections, sexually transmitted infections, insect bites and stings, burns, pink eye, and Covid infections, among others.
Prescriptions can be obtained for birth control, antibiotics, Epi-pens, rescue inhalers, and more.
Orders for blood work and X-rays can also be provided. Students are financially responsible for the cost(s) of pharmacy services/medication, specimen processing, and/or diagnostic imaging.
To request an appointment with the nurse practitioner, please call 212-237-8052 or email np@jjay.cuny.edu.
John Jay College's Health Services Center ensures that students comply with New York State Immunization Laws.
Measles, Mumps & Rubella
Public Health Law Section 2165 requires that all college students, born on or after January 1, 1957, provide proof of immunization for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR).
To better understand the requirements, please read the following materials:
Health Services Center offers free MMR vaccinations to students.
Meningitis
New York State law requires all college students to be educated about meningococcal meningitis disease and to sign a response form stating that they have been vaccinated within the last five (5) years; or have received information about the disease and have chosen not to be vaccinated.
Information about meningitis disease and the available vaccine is mailed to all students and can be found by clicking this link.
You should speak to your health provider if you wish to be vaccinated.
In case of a medical emergency when the Health Services Center is closed, the Office of Campus Security should be notified by phone at 212.237.8888, or by calling on one of the emergency phones located in the hallways throughout the college, or dial 911.
Health Services representatives assist students in the completion of appropriate accident insurance claim forms in the event of injury during an off-campus, activity sponsored and/or supervised by the College. The incident should be reported to the College Health Services in Room L 68.00NB. To set up an appointment, call 212-621-4169.

From time to time, CUNY students or employees may contract an infectious disease that can be spread through casual contact, or they may learn that another student or employee has contracted such a disease. In such circumstances, to ensure the health and safety of the entire CUNY community, students and employees must follow this protocol. Infectious diseases that can be spread through casual contact include measles, mumps, rubella (German measles), chickenpox, hepatitis A; meningococcal meningitis, tuberculosis, pertussis (whooping cough) or MRSA. If a student or an employee is in doubt whether an infectious disease is covered, they should notify the campus Health Services. For more information click here.
The use or promotion of tobacco products on and off-campus-sponsored events is detrimental to the health and safety of students, staff, and visitors. John Jay prohibits smoking, chewing, or otherwise ingesting tobacco or tobacco products in all campus facilities, whether owned, rented, or leased, and in all vehicles that the College owns, leases, rents, contracts for, or controls. Exposure to second-hand smoke is harmful and we recognize our social responsibility to protect the health of students and staff by providing a tobacco-free environment for our campus.
At John Jay, the Wellness Peer Educator Program is devoted to promoting a healthy lifestyle. They aim to address public health concerns associated with unhealthy habits by providing students with education and tools to make positive choices. Passionate student volunteers, known as Wellness Peer Health Educators, have received extensive training from reputable programs such as BACCHUS(NASPA). With this knowledge, they form a sustainable team that positively impacts the student community. Through their dedication and hard work, they inspire change and promote wellness among students. They work in collaboration with the Wellness Center's professional staff to encourage student wellness and provide support.
To become a part of the Peer Education Program, you must meet specific requirements. Firstly, you need to fill out an application at jjcwellness@jjay.cuny.edu. Once your application is approved, it is crucial that you commit to attending the training sessions and fully complete the CPE training program, which is available in the summer semester. You will need to dedicate at least one year to the program after finishing the training. After completing the nine CPE Training Modules, you will be required to take the BACCHUS CPE Post-Test and score at least 80% to qualify for your CPE certificate and certification card.
Mission: To provide a healthy campus environment that promotes, encourages and prepares students for satisfying and productive lifestyles.
