Mission

The mission of the Master of Public Administration in Inspection and Oversight Program at John Jay College of Criminal Justice is to prepare students for public service careers in inspection and oversight and to advance governance through scholarly and applied research and community service. The program celebrates its students’ diversity and seeks to inspire them to the highest ideals of public service and leadership, reinforced by a commitment to accountability, transparency, ethical practice, equity, and justice.

MPA-IO Director: Professor David Shapiro

Degree requirements:

Students enrolled in the MPA in Inspection and Oversight Program (MPA-IO Campus and MPA-IO Online) are required to complete 42 course credits.

Students are advised to complete PAD 700 and two other core foundation courses, PAD 706 and PAD 723, within the first 15 credits of matriculation. Failure to complete any of the requirements described in the paragraph above will result in a student not being permitted to register for future classes without the explicit permission of the program director.

Capstone Seminar

Requires students to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained during their MPA graduate study to a semester-long project chosen by the student in consultation with the faculty member directing the seminar.

Initiative for Gender Equity in the Public Sector (IGEPS)

The Initiative for Gender Equity in the Public Sector (IGEPS) conducts evidence-based research to make public service and public policy more equitable for all gender identities. We partner with public sector organizations to equip administrators with the best tools and resources to make informed decisions for achieving gender equity.

The Northeast Slavery Records Index (NESRI) is an online searchable compilation of records that identify individual enslaved persons and enslavers in the states of New York, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Association of Inspectors General (AIG) Student Memberships

MPA-IO students who have completed at least 15 credit hours in the MPA-IO Program will receive complimentary one-year AIG Student and NY/NJ Chapter memberships who continue pursuing their studies in the MPA-IO Program. Qualified students are automatically enrolled in the membership.
